This painting was based on traditional sweet shops, which Kirsten discovered in towns such as Henley on Thames, Whitby and Brighton as well as Pateley Bridge in Yorkshire, which is home to the oldest sweet shop in England.
Four shelves of deliciously detailed jars are filled with popular favourites and the text and collaged images in the background are relevant to the sweets within. Several labels are vintage and others are created on old envelopes, using an old-fashioned letter printing set. This references the fact that sweet jars like these were often found in post offices. A few of the sweets are invented and there are several miniature birds perched on the glass jars.
These are taken from collectors cards produced in the 50's and the birds often appear in kirsten's paintings, adding to the many surprises.
Works are created on gesso boards, using washes of acrylic and ink over collaged surfaces. Limited editionprints use archival quality inks on Hahnemuhle etching paper. Frames are usually white or pale oak, mounted prints are hand worked by Kirsten and float mounted.
