Henley-based freelance illustrator and graphic designer Emma Newton’s work spans greetings cards, books, stationery and gifts. Her designs have been a hit with both Nigella AND Dot Cotton - we’re intrigued....

Tell us about your background

When I left art college I worked my way up in a number of greeting card publishers, learning the trade, which was great for drawing skills, pre CAD! I then landed my dream job in London working for Tigerprint (Hallmark), a stationery and gift supplier to M&S. I’m now a freelance Illustrator and have an agent for stationery, book and editorial illustration. I live in Henley with three boisterous children, two cats and a very patient husband.

What made you decide to start your business?

After a seven-year career break for children, I was dying to be creative again but still be at home. My twins have just started school, I’ve invested in a new Mac and a desk in the corner of my living room. Jenkat Digital www.jenkatdigital.co.uk have also built me a great website which has been invaluable.

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere. I love browsing on Pinterest - it’s great for colour palettes and trends. Art galleries, the supermarket, shop windows, magazines.... If I’m working on Christmas product there’s nothing better than Liberty’s Christmas department.

What has been your biggest highlight to date?

Nigella Lawson using my crockery in her Christmas cookery TV programme and an Easter card that I designed appearing on Dot Cotton’s mantelpiece!

What’s been your biggest challenge?

Definitely juggling three young children and finding my creative ‘vibe’ again. I’ve taken a couple of painting evening classes at Henley college which was brilliant for learning new skills and finding my enthusiasm again.

Nugget of Wisdom?

Keep trying, believe in yourself and find something that you enjoy.
